Documents Required for Passport – Fresh Passport – All Scenarios Covered

People have a different kind of scenarios / cases while applying or updating the passport. So as scenario changes the list of documents required for passport also changes. For example if you are a divorcee, widow then you need to submit some extra document along with most common ones. Same way if a child is adopted then different set of documents required. Here is this article we will try to cover all possible scenarios and try to produce simple and complete list of documents required for passport fresh application.

Here onwards we will use some short forms: PoA – Proof of Address, PoI – Proof of Identity, DoB – Proof of Birth.

Basic common documents required for passport application (Section 1)

These common documents are generally required in all cases and scenarios.

Address Proof (PoA) –

These are most common PoA documents required for passport application either new or reissue of passport.

Date of Birth before 26/01/1989?

  • YES – Then birth certificate and school leaving certificate will be accepted as proof of DoB.
  • No – Then only birth certificate will be accepted.

Non-ECR category?

  • YES – This is the common case, you need to submit your highest educational certificate. Minimum required is 10th Pass. Most of us will fall in this category. In other cases, if you are older than 50 years then submit a birth certificate or school leaving certificate.
  • No – then you don’t need to give any document but your passport will have ECR (Emigration Check Required) stamp.

Normal, New, Adult

Documents Required for Fresh Passport: You need basic common documents showed up in section 1.

For a resident of Jammu & Kashmir: You need basic common documents showed up in section 1. Plus, there are three conditions for this category these are as follows,

  • Your Place of Birth is in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).
  • Your Permanent Address is in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).
  • Your Present Address is in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).

For a resident of Nagaland: You need basic common documents showed up in section 1. Plus, there are three conditions for this category these are as follows,

  • Your Place of Birth is in Nagaland.
  • Your Permanent Address is in Nagaland.
  • Your Present Address is in Nagaland

For Students staying away from their parent’s current residence (Normal, Fresh, Adult): Common documents showed up in section 1, plus

  • Student Identity Card issued by Government Recognized Educational Institutions
  • Bonafide Letter from authorized signatory of college (On official letterhead of UGC recognized College)

For Separated couples (Normal, Fresh, Adult): Common documents showed up in section 1, plus

  • Marriage certificate
  • Affidavit as per Annexure K (for applicants who are unable to provide the prescribed marriage certificate or joint affidavit due to marital discord or separation)

For Retired Government Officer: Common PoA and DoB documents showed up in section 1, plus Pension Payment Order

Tatkal, New, Adult

Documents Required for Passport under Tatkal scheme – Fresh

Common documents showed up in section 1, plus

  • Standard Affidavit as per Annexure ‘I’
  • Verification Certificate as per the specimen as per Annexure ‘F’

For resident of Jammu & Kashmir

If you are staying outside J&K for last 5 years then you need common documents for tatkal scheme plus, proof of registration / migration certificate

If you are not staying outside J&K for last 5 years then you cannot apply under tatkal scheme, you need to apply for a normal passport.

For a resident of Nagaland – resident of Nagaland cannot apply for passport under tatkal scheme. You need to apply for a normal password. To check document list please check Section 1.

In most of the remaining Tatkal cases, a list of documents required for passport in same as section 2.

Normal, Fresh, Minors (Child, New Born Baby)

Tips:

  • For minor applicants, present address proof document in the name of parent(s) can be submitted.
  • For minor applicants, documents required for passport application can be attested by parents.
  • The minor applicant is eligible for Non-ECR till he/she attains the age of 18 years.

For Minors between 15 and 18 years of age wishing to obtain full validity passport of 10 years: Common PoA, DoB document as per Section 1.

For Minors whose parent have a valid passport with spouse name endorsed in parent’s passport: Common PoA, DoB document as per Section 1. Plus,

  • A Declaration affirming the particulars furnished in the application about the minor as per: Annexure ‘H’
  • Attested photocopy of Passport of both or either parent

For adopted Minors / Child:
Common PoA, DoB documents required for passport application as per Section 1. Plus,

If adopted by Indian Parents

  • A Declaration affirming the particulars furnished in the application about the minor as per: Annexure ‘H’
  • Valid adoption deed with photo of the child duly attested by the Court (in the case of Christians, Muslims and Parsis, a court decree/ order granting adoption/ guardianship and allowing the child to be taken out of the Country)

If adopted by Foreign Parents

  • Court Decree/order in respect of legal guardian
  • CARA No Objection Certificate
  • Copy of the guarantee executed before the Court concerned

For Minor whose parents Divorced: Common PoA, DoB document as per Section 1. Plus,

  • A Declaration affirming the particulars furnished in the application about the minor as per: Annexure ‘H’
  • Certified copy of the court order for custody of the child in favor of the applicant’s parent

For Minors whose Parents Separated but not legally divorced: Common PoA, DoB document as per Section 1. Plus,

  • A Declaration affirming the particulars furnished in the application about the minor child as per Annexure ‘C’ (by single parent or by either parent who are separated but not formally divorced)

For Minor whose parent is Single: Common PoA, DoB document as per Section 1. Plus,

If Single Parent of the child born out of wedlock

  • A Declaration affirming the particulars furnished in the application about the minor child as per Annexure ‘C’ (by single parent or by either parent who are separated but not formally divorced)

If Single Parent of the child where one parent deceased

  • A Declaration affirming the particulars furnished in the application about the minor as per: Annexure ‘H’
  • Death Certificate of First Marriage Spouse

Change / Update / Addition

You need basic documents required for passport from section 1, plus

For Change/ Addition in name due to / after marriage:

  • An attested copy of marriage certificate issued by Registrar of Marriage Or
  • A joint affidavit from husband and wife along with a joint photograph, (Specimen at Annexure ‘D’) When a joint affidavit is not possible the affidavit should indicate the reason for it. The change in the first name amounts to a substantial name change and the regular procedure for name change should apply.

For Major name change

  • Paperclipping of two leading daily newspapers in original (one daily newspaper should be of the area of Applicant’s Permanent Address and the other at Current Address or nearby area)
  • Deed poll/sworn affidavit as per Annexure ‘E’

For Minor (not child) name change

  • Deed poll/sworn affidavit as per Annexure ‘E’

For Change/ Addition in name due to / after marriage in Tatkal Scheme.

  • Standard Affidavit as per Annexure ‘I’
  • Verification Certificate as per the specimen as per Annexure ‘F’
  • An attested copy of marriage certificate issued by Registrar of Marriage OR
  • A joint affidavit from husband and wife along with a joint photograph, (Specimen at Annexure ‘D’)

For Minor (not child) name change in Tatkal Scheme

  • Standard Affidavit as per Annexure ‘I’
  • Verification Certificate as per the specimen as per Annexure ‘F’
  • Deed poll/sworn affidavit as per Annexure ‘E’

    You cannot apply for major name change in Tatkal scheme

For change in name for child / newborn baby

  • Paperclipping of two leading daily newspapers in original (one daily newspaper should be of the area of Applicant’s Permanent Address and the other at Current Address or nearby area)
  • Deed poll/sworn affidavit as per Annexure ‘E’
  • Proof of Present Address in new name
  • Proof of DOB in old name

Tips

  • If you have aadhaar card then it is the best document as PoA and PoI.
